The problem is, Y sperm dies earlier than X sperm, which means that if you had intercourse days preceding the ovulation, the probability is, you'll have a baby girl than a boy because Y sperms had died before it can fertilize the egg.

To effectively have a son, medical process like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can be done. Through this process, you can tell the doctor to implant a boy embryo in the uterus. This process, however, is not legal in the US and other many civilized places. Artificial Insemination (AI) also allows one to choose the gender of the baby. However it isn't as accurate as the IVF. To reduce the level of uncertainties in these processes, procedures like Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis and Sperm Sorting, where sperms responsible for the two genders are sorted out, can be made. The said medical processes are commonly done to people who cannot bear a child or having difficulty having one.

Other than the processes mentioned above, there are also many old people's beliefs about how to have preferred sex of the baby. Some of these beliefs are doing the deed under the moon to bear a girl and eating a lot of red meat to conceive a boy. The only thing about these beliefs are, no one can affirm or contradict if they are effective.
