A laptop is a device that has allowed computer users to perform a multitude of tasks on the go, without worrying about bulky computer towers or wires.  dell latitude d620 laptop battery    They vary from being more powerful and slightly larger to very slim and preferable for portability. This also affects the battery life of your laptop. There are many ways to optimize your battery life while it's not plugged in.

Lower your screen's brightness as much as you can. If you are in an area that requires more screen light, consider moving to a position that causes less glare and lets you dim your screen.

Use only one program at a time, or as few as possible. Multitasking uses more of the computer's resources and therefore drains its power faster. Consider prioritizing your activities. Using a word processor or checking your email, for example, will use much less power than playing a game or watching a movie.

Refrain from using external peripherals, such as USB devices, or using your CD drive. Use your laptop's built-in mouse if you can, and only plug in other devices when you need to. Charging a device like an mp3 player also uses plenty of power. If you don't need your WiFi, disable that as well by right clicking on your wireless connection icon in the taskbar, and clicking "Disable."

Clean and maintain your battery contacts. Remove the battery every so often and use a Q-tip to clean the metal where the battery connects to the laptop, or use a moist cloth with rubbing alcohol. This optimizes the power transfer and makes it more efficient, preventing power loss.

Use your computer's hibernate function instead of standby if you need to close down and want to pick up where you left off later. Standby lets you start up faster but uses more power when it is in use, meaning you could potentially lose plenty of battery time when you aren't even using your laptop.

Optimize your computer's power settings. Click "Start," then open the "Control Panel." Open the "Power Options" (under "Performance and Maintenance if you're not using Classic Mode) settings to change how your computer uses power when on battery. To make the most of your battery life, select "Max Battery."

Keep your laptop defragmented by using the Disk Defragmenter at least once a month. This makes it easier for your computer to access its files and puts less strain on the hard drive, making power use more efficient. To use this, click "Start," go to "All Programs," then "Accessories," open the "System Tools" menu, then click "Disk Defragmenter.

Disable your WiFi if you don't need it by clicking the wireless icon on the menu bar at the top of your screen (located by the clock) and click "Turn AirPort Off." While you're at it, turn off Bluetooth by clicking the Bluetooth icon in the same area and clicking "Turn Bluetooth Off." If you don't have the icon on the menu bar, open the System Preferences, click "Bluetooth," located under "Internet & Wireless," then uncheck the box next to "On."

Open your System Preferences, then click "Energy Saver," under the Hardware category. Click the "Battery" tab, then edit the settings to your preferences. Putting the display to sleep sooner, rather than later, can save plenty of battery power. Putting the computer to sleep is similar to Windows' Standby setting, saves power, and can start up quickly. You can also opt to show the battery status in the menu bar so you can keep an eye on it.

Click the "Displays" button in System Preferences under the Hardware category, and select the "Display" tab. You can alter the screen's brightness here,  hp pavilion dv6000 laptop battery    letting you dim it to save battery power. Alternatively you can use the buttons on your keyboard, which may vary by model. (For example, the F1 and F2 buttons can be used to dim and brighten the screen on some Mac models.)
Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up.  How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible?  Here are 15 easy ways to do so.

1. Defrag regularly -  The faster your hard drive does its work – less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery.  Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.

2. Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen.  Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance.  Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

3. Cut down on programs running in the background.  Itunes, Desktop Search, etc.  All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life.  Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.

4. Cut down external devices – USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery.  Remove or shut them down when not in use.  It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory.  Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy,  sony vgp-bps2 laptop battery    so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.
