Hearing impairment is one of the more common hearing disabilities in the UK and the US. The RNID (The Royal National Institute for Deaf People) has estimated, based on a 2005 survey that 9 million UK residents suffer from some type of hearing loss, while numbers in the US talk about 38 million. Most types of hearing impairment, in particular, age related hearing loss and noise induced hearing loss are irreversible. Once damage to the hearing system has happened, the only treatment is offered by modern technology. The family of products available as treatment to overcome a hearing disability is called ALDS or Assistive Listening Devices. Here is an overview of the various types of ALDS.

Once damage to the hearing system has happened, the only treatment is
offered by modern technology. The family of products available as
treatment to overcome a hearing disability is called ALDS or Assistive
Listening Devices. Here is an overview of the various types of ALDS.A Guide To Hearing Disability Aids:Hearing
Aids - these are the most common type of technology devices which the
hard of hearing use. The device which is available through the NHS or
privately is able to amplify external sound to overcome damaged hair
cells within the human ear.Amplified
Phones - perhaps the most innovative feature of ALDS is their ability
to custom daily living aids to become suitable for the hearing impaired.
Hard of hearing often find normal phones and mobile phones restrictive
as these offer inadequate features. The ringtone is not loud enough to
alert someone to incoming call and the voice of the person on the line
is again, not loud enough. If a normal phone has an amplification level
of 8dB, amplified phones offer an amplification level of up to 50dB.
Together with adjustable receiving tone control, amplified phones allow
the hard of hearing to use the most common communication tool with ease.Amplified
Alerts - for those suffering from a hearing disability, the struggle is
often getting alerted in various circumstances. Amplified alerts
include two popular daily living aids which have been custom made for
the hard of hearing. The first are a group of extra loud alarm clocks
which offers a complete sensory wake up call in that they include loud
ringer, flashing lights and vibrating pad which is placed under the
pillow. The second is a group of amplified doorbells which includes such
features as flashing lights, loud ringer and often hearing aid
compatibility. These are designed to alert the hard of hearing using
other sensory triggers.If
you suspect you have a hearing loss, and you experience hearing
difficulty you should book an appointment for a hearing test. It is
important to investigate not only the potential reason for your hearing
loss, but also to provide a baseline for your hearing ability.
