The following article discusses the difference between LCD tv and Plasma tv. It takes a look at the different technologies each uses and the results each produces. In the end, customers should have a good idea of what kind of TV they want to buy.
Many people have heard both the terms LCD TV and Plasma TV. Not only have they heard the term, but they have also probably heard more than one argument about which was better. As if this didn't make things already confusing, the fact that many electronic companies offer televisions in both LCD and Plasma adds to many people not knowing which television to choose. The fact is that while LCD TV's and Plasma televisions look similar, they are very different and by understanding these differences, it should make it easier for the customer to make a choice in which kind of television to purchase. Do make sure you check out each of the popular LCD TV brands before you choose a TV set for yourself.

LCD vs. Plasma Technology

The major difference between LCD TV and Plasma televisions is in the way they work. Plasma screens use a matrix of tiny plasma cells that when charged by precise electrical voltages make the image that you see on the screen. LCD, which stands for liquid crystal display, are liquid crystals which have been placed between two pieces of glass. When the crystals are charged with electricity they make a picture. While it is possible to go into some very specific numbers on how everything works, the above creates a good enough picture for most people to understand the difference.

Is There a Difference in Picture Quality?

Perhaps out of every question someone could ask about the difference between LCD TV and Plasma television the most important for most people is if there is a difference in picture quality. The simple answer is that yes there is a difference. However, the differences between the two technologies is a little complex. The easiest way to describe the difference is in the color black. Black is the color that allows us to see the contrast of things on a television screen. Because of the properties of Plasma television, most plasma TV's give a color that is closer to true black than LCD does. This means that as far as contrast detail Plasma TV is better.

However, before writing off LCD realize that LCD TV often has a higher native resolution. Native resolution is how clearly the picture is seen by the naked eye without having to adjust things such as color, contrast, brightness and the like. Because LCD TV often provides a higher native resolution, many people feel they see a much clearer picture with LCD.

What Else is Different.

Aside from picture quality and the technology of the two, the final big difference between Plasma Television and LCD TV is the fact that LCD TV is often much more energy efficient. In fact with some of the newer LCD eco friendly screens coming out, LCD is leading the charge in both efficiency and green technology. Also, LCD TV's on average tend to take up less space and are generally much lighter than Plasma televisions which can make a big difference to people.

In the end, the main thing to keep in mind about the difference between LCD TV and Plasma is that both have something to offer and it really comes down to personal choice. Admitted LCD TV gives you close to the same picture quality as Plasma and is a lot cheaper, but some people feel Plasma is worth the extra money.
