While it is true that there have been a large number of wonderful, beneficial and greatly needed medical advancements that have occurred so far in the 21st century, the sad fact of the matter is that many of those innovations offer a far worse potential for misery and woe than the original problem they were designed to solve.
While it is true that there have been a large number of wonderful, beneficial and greatly needed medical advancements that have occurred so far in the 21st century, the sad fact of the matter is that many of those innovations offer a far worse potential for misery and woe than the original problem they were designed to solve.

Cell phones are a great technology that allows people to communicate from almost anywhere, to almost anywhere. However, there are now legitimate fears that continuous or regular use of cell phones can lead to the onset of brain tumors and cancer.

Recently, an effective acne medication has caused the onset of severe inflammatory bowel conditions in patients all over the world. And, with the use of a simple birth control device, some women are experiencing a wide range of irritating, painful and in some instances deadly side effects, for the desire to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

For more than half of a century, there have been a number of ways to use hormonal contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies, though the most popular form was through the use of “The Pill.” Hormonal contraceptives use a blend of a couple of types of female hormones to trick the female body into believing that it is already pregnant, when it is not. This prevents ovulation and the attachment of a fertilized egg to the wall of the uterus, which thwarts the onset of an unwanted pregnancy.

And though the first three generations of the pills worked, they did come with some side effects and drawbacks. Usually, weight gain, a loss of sexual desire and a host of minor irritations affected some women who took “The Pill” but all of these were manageable on the whole. The one major drawback to the oral contraceptive pill was the fact that is required women to take one pill each and every day for an entire 21-day or 27-day cycle. Missing even one day would completely ruin the effects of the contraceptive.

In addition, birth control pills can be disrupted by antibiotic medications, meaning that if a woman has an illness and is taking antibiotics, she will not be protected from unwanted pregnancy, even if she is taking the pill as prescribed.

This is where the Nuvaring contraceptive device comes into play.

Merck Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Nuvaring, produced and distributed a new kind of hormonal contraceptive device that was meant to be as free from user error as possible. Marketed as an “Insert and Forget” birth control device, Nuvaring was nearly foolproof for the women taking it.

Nuvaring is a plastic inner vaginal ring that secretes a blend of hormones into the blood stream, much the same way as a birth control pill does. Nuvaring differs, though, in that it is simply a plastic ring that a woman inserts into her vagina at the beginning of her monthly reproductive cycle. There is no complicated schedule of pills to take.

Unfortunately, there were many dangerous and life threatening Nuvaring side effects for the women who used the device. The most serious of these side effects is venous thrombosis, more commonly known as blood clots. Nuvaring blood clots are an extremely serious health risk, as a blood clot that travels into the brain or the heart is fatal.
