Fishing for carp can be frustrating enough without having any clue where to look for your fish.

Fishing for carp can be frustrating enough without having any clue where to look for your fish. Here are some helpful tips for beginning carp anglers looking to best leverage their fishing efforts so that they have the best chances of success on their fishing adventure.

Overhanging Bushes or Trees

These are typical landmarks that can usually be located rather close to the shore. Since the shade from the bushes offer sufficient cover and shelter from the sun, it is likely that carp will seek out these locations.

Bends

As a stream or river curves, the water that is moving and carrying food faster will have to move outside of this bend. Carp will use these locations to their advantage as it is easier to catch traveling food in these places.

On the Edges of Currents

If a current is slowing due to an obstructing object like a stump or a boulder in the water, anything traveling with it will slow as well. For this reason, many fish will find it convenient to wait along the edges of these areas in order to grab some food that may happen by.

Currents that are Merging

Water that is flowing will inevitably be carrying food. This means that once two separate bodies of water collide, the fish will be able to locate even more food than they might with one source.

Undercuts

These are great river hiding places for fish. You can find undercuts wherever a current has cut away a small cave or hole in the rock or earth lining the shore. These places provide shelter and protection from predators for fish and they will seek them out any chance they get.

Falls and Dams

Once water continuously falls from falls or a dam, this will eventually create a large drop-off or hole where fish will linger to rest from the rush of the current and feed on food sinking to the bottom.

Riparian Areas

Riperian zones or areas are the center piece of vegetation that is in between the flat land and river that is beyond the shoreline. These spots act as a filter that keeps the water from over sedimentation, erosion, or runoff from the surface that is polluted. These areas are perfect hiding places for the carp as they have plenty of access to food, shade and shelter to provide tired, hungry fish.
