If you are looking into getting a motor home, you may be surprised at how much less a fifth wheel costs - but yet has every amenity that the high-end coach does.
Fifth wheel trailers are among the biggest, most luxurious, and pricey Recreational Vehicles. They can sleep up to eight folks, and have a number of slide outs - some as many as 5. This, not surprisingly, contributes significantly to the weight, which impacts fuel consumption. The fifth wheel is recognizable from the downward aimed hitch pin which is attached underneath the forward overhang. This hitch pin connects in the bed of a pick up truck on top of the rear axle.

The fifth wheel trailer is set up and equipped with options and accessories similar to a conventional travel trailer. They may be unhitched likewise - while parked and not being used. Many designs can be big, making them luxurious travel trailers and are basically a home away from home.

Design

Fifth Wheel Trailers are basically constructed with an elevated forward section which can be stretched over the bed of sport utility or pickup truck. The overall length of the 5th wheel configuration can therefore be six-feet less in contrast to other trailer configurations. This in turn makes for a far better driving experience: For starters, the turning radius is way better, with less need to 'swing wide' on turns.

How A 5th Wheel Trailer Is Coupled to the Tow Truck

A "kingpin" extends downward from the bottom of the forward part of trailer. It is connected with a specialized trailer hitch - usually based in the bed of a pickup truck. This fifth wheel hitch (the 'female' section of the hitch) is generally fastened directly above or a bit forward of the rear axle of the pickup truck.

The structure of the fifth wheel keeps a weight distribution that gives ideal ride characteristics and fuel mileage. They tend to be easy to tow as compared to regular travel trailers, because the load is put on the towing vehicle instead behind it. The downward pressure on the tow vehicle is not over the back bumper, as with traditional hitches.

Note that the more substantial weight of the average fifth wheel would certainly make towing one by a standard ball hitch hazardous and normally out of the question. For one thing, the rear tires of the tow vehicle wouldn't accept the additional weight. On top of that, the front wheels of the tow vehicle might virtually be off the ground, because of all that weight pressing down rear of the rear axle.

Hence the structure of the 5th wheel trailer is effective for a variety of reasons. In addition to following nicely behind the tow vehicle, gas mileage is as good as possible for the heavier weight.

Sometimes Airbrakes Are Needed

Air brakes have to be added on all trailers over 12,000 lbs. GTW (Gross Trailer Weight). The tow vehicle must be furnished with airbrakes. Electric brakes or electric over hydraulic brakes is usually authorized on some special fifth wheel trailers over 12,000 GTW in which up to 50 percent of the weight goes to the towing truck.

The Need For Eight-Foot Pickup Beds

Pickup trucks having typical eight-foot long beds provide adequate clearance in between the cab of the truck and the forward end of the trailer while in sharp turns. On the other hand pickup trucks having 6 foot long “short-beds” would make the front end of the trailer impact the truck's cab in sharp turns.

And so the fifth wheel trailer is an ideal option if you are considering choosing a travel trailer for camping, family trips, and / or possibly even living in it. Many have washer / dryer rooms, as well as all the appliances you might expect in a residential home. You'll benefit from the luxuries of a high-end motor home, but for substantially less cash.
