The 2009 recession that saw the downfall of many industries and various organizations, had also greatly impacted the travel industry. With the loss of jobs, many people had stopped traveling altogether. With the aim of securing the future and fulfilling the basic necessities, travel was the last thing on people’s minds. Even businessmen and traders were trying their best to cut down costs by avoiding business travel and were relying more other technology like video conferencing and tele-conferencing.

As a result of all this, travel industry, particularly the airline companies had to suffer huge losses in 2009.  Many airlines around the world had to shut down operations because of heavy losses. Some examples of these are -- Zambian Airways, Blue wings (German airline), Air Fiji, MyAir (Italian airline), and SkyEurope to name a few.

But then again, after every downfall, resurgence also happens. 2010 saw the revival of the global airlines industry. People started traveling again and the global aviation traffic went up by 8.2%, as per the annual report of International Air Transport (IATA). Airlines from the Asia-Pacific region recorded a 9% growth while European air carriers recorded just a 5.1% growth in passenger traffic in 2010.

Middle Eastern airlines recorded the strongest growth of 17.8%. And North American airlines recorded 7.4% growth in passenger traffic.

With the increase in the passenger traffic, airlines that had been running into losses in 2009 saw a revival. With fresh marketing strategies and attractive deals to motivate the customer to fly more, airlines were leaving no stone unturned to ensure sustainable revenues. And all of it eventually paid off.

Travel industry is one of the biggest industries in the world today and it is only expected to get better from here.
