Whether by choice or by circumstance you find yourself perusing the pages of a directory looking for London nanny agencies, you will be feeling the weight of no doubt the hardest decision of your life.

What should you be looking for in a nanny or the person who will be responsible for sharing the childcare?

Before you start talking to nannies in London or London nanny agencies you would be wise to spend a few moments considering what you need from the individual you are looking to employ to care for your child.

Do you need someone to care for a child round the clock, or just to assist the mother? Is education, a second language and cultural aspects a part of the job. A good nanny agency will work with you to understand what you need from this person, but any work you can do on your own or with the other members of your family will get you off onto a better start.

When it comes to meeting the job applicants in person you should have a checklist, written or just mental, of necessary things.

For starters, you must ensure that the nannies in London that you are interviewing have the relevant qualifications and police checks.

Then, think about what skills the individual will need to do the job well. Will she need a drivers licence to drive the family car to school, for play dates or to the shops? Will you be asking them to accompany the family on ski holidays – if so; perhaps an ability to ski will be beneficial.

You also need to think about personalities, and what kind of person will fit in most successfully into your family and be a complementary companion for your child. Do you need someone who is into sports rather than culture? Someone firm, to help instil boundaries for a child, or gentle and encouraging, to boost a child’s confidence?

Get your child’s feedback – but take it with a pinch of salt! – and most of all, take your time to find the right person. You won’t regret it.
