If you work with children as a nanny or in schools and are looking for a new opportunity then perhaps a job living with a family overseas would be an interesting new direction for you.

Families who live overseas often require a nanny, not just to help with childcare, but also to help the child with learning or speaking English. Conversely, it is also true that foreign nannies are employed in the UK to encourage the child to speak a second language or because they are adopted and their parents want them to stay in touch with their cultural heritage.

This means new and interesting developments and opportunities for individuals working in childcare.

But what skills do you need if you want to work abroad and how do you go about getting a position?

Firstly, you will need the same skills and qualifications as if you were going for a childcare job in the UK. Relevant skills and qualifications in childcare or teaching, backed up with certificates and references, as well as up to date CRB checks and first aid certificates.

Additional things such as a clean driver’s licence and a second language (preferably for the country you wish to travel to) would come in useful.

Good advice would be to register with a nanny agency in London – not because you want to work as a nanny in London but because you will find that a nanny agency in London will have openings for jobs overseas.

They will take a look at your CV and consider what you are looking for before trying to find a family that you would fit, and vice-versa. The agency will advise you on the things you need to consider whether you are working as a nanny in London or overseas: aspects of duties and pay to name just a few.

After you have been to a few interviews you will get s few for the jobs and families out there, and hopefully, find a family that you will get to know and love and that you can accompany somewhere new and exciting.
