In the burgeoning Information Age, children and adults need to
improve fast note taking speed to handle increased data volume and
record spoken information effectively. Otherwise, they will continue to
struggle in school setting and in their professional careers. It is
important that children begin developing fast note taking skills in
their early school years so that they will be more productive through
high school and beyond as students, workers, and members of their
communities. Also, it is essential that the adults who did not learn
this skill in school are afforded an opportunity to acquire it to be
more productive performing their jobs. By mastering a skill of recording
spoken information efficiently children will enhance their learning
comprehension in the school environment and adults will have more
accurate information to make better decisions in the business setting.
Existing Systems
Existing
word abbreviating methods of traditional shorthand and speedwriting
have been experiencing a significant decline due to the long learning
curve and the difficulty for everyday use. On the other hand, the demand
for systems to enable people to take fast notes accurately continues to
be strong.
At present time, two types of word abbreviating are
commonly used: 1) non-alphabetical based system - Gregg Computer
Shorthand, 2) alphabetical based systems. Speedwriting By Pullis. The
Gregg Computer Shorthand was developed in 1893. Speedwriting by Pullis
was published in 1970.Due to their significant flaws and lack of
demand,no improvements or enhancements to these and all the other
systems have been made for the last 30 years.
The demand has
declined for traditional methods because they are all (alphabetical and
non-alphabetical) based on memorizing random abbreviations. And a big
part of it is that it requires months of training, and even then, not
every person can decipher the shorthand of his/her own or of another
individual.
According to Darnell Research Corporation 90% of all
high schools and colleges in the Unites States have discontinued
offering traditional shorthand and speedwriting courses citing the
extended learning time and difficulties of use as primary reasons.
One
must memorize a unique code to a corresponding word which leads to a
very long time to master a vocabulary required in school or at work.Any
system based on rote memorization must be used or practiced daily. If
it's not used or practiced daily the codes don't stay in memory and
cannot be applied when needed.
Another significant problem with
existing systems is that they don't cover a full English vocabulary
forcing to create user made abbreviations. On the contrary, the proposed
system will be learned quickly by children and adults with a wide range
of abilities, ages and occupations and it will not require them to
memorize a high volume of random abbreviations and will eliminate.user
made codes.
Make It Usable by a Broader Range of People
Adults
and children need to learn how to process spoken information so that
they can take fast notes more efficiently. This project will address
learning and communication challenges faced by a wide range of children
and adults. The software tool will be universally designed to include
people with a wide range of abilities, ages and occupations in the
research process. The system will offer a small set of abbreviating rules
which can be quickly mastered by a person with average abilities. The
proposed product will allow users to learn it gradually and it will not
require a long learning curve. Also, this system will dramatically reduce
the amount of rote memorization and will not demand from users
remembering a high volume of random abbreviations.
Provide User Flexibility
On
one hand, retaining of spoken information is a significant part of
daily activities in schools, workplace and interpersonal
communications. On the other hand, children and adults have difficulties
performing fast note taking using the existing methods. To date, emerging
technology has not made a significant impact on improving the methods
and systems for fast note taking to record spoken information. The
proposed project will produce a user-friendly system that can
custom-tailored to a wide range of users and their personal styles.A
user will be able to adjust codes to application and personal style. The
abbreviating rules will have options to suit user previous background
and various ability levels. Also, the proposed product will allow
integration of its abbreviating rules with the rules of the existing
shorthand and speedwriting systems. For example,if a user will have an
option of applying some of the abbreviating patterns currently used with
any number of rules of the proposed system.
