Hypnotherapy can reduce pain and anxiety, neutralize the effects of trauma,
change harmful habits into healthy ones, eliminate phobias and fears, and
transform beliefs and self-talk. It functions on a state of physical and
mental relaxation which allows the subconscious mind to solely concentrate on
and perceive messages provided by a therapist.
Over the years, our conscious mind may develop irrational reactions to
particular situations causing stress as an outcome. Hypnotherapy
effectively targets the source of our decision making process and reprograms it
to become more efficient. The deeply relaxed state renders the
subconscious mind highly focused and ready to accept suggestions. This
enables the mind to reconfigure how it tells the body to behave; therefore
restructuring a client’s thought process and eliminating adverse reactions that
may cause stress.
A person who does not want to be hypnotized cannot be hypnotized or induced
to do or say anything which violates personal standards of behavior or
integrity. Hypnosis can only succeed in helping people make changes they
desire. Therefore, the power of hypnosis actually resides in the patient
them self.
Hypnotherapy has long been used in relation to childbirth. It is sometimes
used during pregnancy to prepare a mother for birth, and during childbirth to
reduce anxiety, discomfort and pain.
However, there is agreement that the origin of modern hypnosis is with the
methods employed in Mesmerism. Whilst Braid differed in offering an explanation
of hypnotic effects that did not rely on supernatural forces, he credited the
methods used in hypnosis to the practice of Mesmerism.
Hypnotism might therefore not inaptly be designated, Rational Mesmerism, in
contra-distinction to the Transcendental Mesmerism of the Mesmerists
The growing application of cognitive and behavioral psychological theories
and concepts to the explanation of hypnosis paved the way for a closer
integration of hypnotherapy with various cognitive and behavioral therapies.

A hypnotherapist often differs from other therapists because they focus on
the role of subconscious behaviors and influences on the client's life.
