For any firearms enthusiast, the proper care and maintenance of their guns can go a very long way. There’s no question that cleaning is one of the most important things to do with a firearm, and some care and attention can make your handgun last for years and years.

The first step in cleaning your gun is buying a trusty cleaning kit. You can buy a variety of cleaning kits wherever firearms are sold. Some kits are designed to clean specific firearms like shotguns and pistols, but you should buy a universal cleaning kit, which is designed to clean any kind of firearm. They come with everything you need, from a cleaning solvent, cleaning patches, rods and brushes, and more.

Review the owner’s manual and make sure that your gun is unloaded, and remove any ammunition from the cleaning area. Protect the gun’s grips and dip your cleaning rod into the cleaning solvent then scrub the bore to dissolve the residue. While the bore is soaking in the bore cleaning solvent, spray the moving parts of the handgun with a cleaning product and scrub accordingly.

Next, dip a cleaning patch in the cleaning solvent, and pass it through the bore to remove fouling. Don’t put the dirty patch back, use a new one instead and go through one direction only. Repeat until there are no more signs of grime and residue. Spray a cleaning agent on your gun’s parts and on the firearm coatings to prevent rusting.

The next step is to lubricate. Apply oil on the gun’s bore. Again, with a clean patch, dip it in the lubricant and pass it several times through the bore. For the gun’s moving parts, it’s important to not lubricate excessively. Use a coatings protective solution to prevent corrosion and rusting. Doing this can also protect your handgun from the elements and build its resistance.

Put your gun back together and once again apply firearm coatings to prevent lint and rusting. Once that’s done, examine your handgun and see if all the parts are clean and working smoothly. With a bit of cleaning, lubrication, and protection, your gun will last a long time. The proper maintenance of your gun will make sure that it works when you need it.
