Although spring may be in the air, this doesn’t
necessarily mean that it will feel the same way once you find yourself in the
middle of a lake stuck in your fishing boat. Even though the weather may
finally predict temperatures in the 60s, it can be quite a different story out
on the water due to wind.
Because of this potential reminder of winter, it
is important to be prepared with plenty of warm, layered clothing. Every angler
knows it is very possible to be freezing one minute and overheated the next,
particularly if you just spent twenty minutes struggling to reel in a catch.
This is why dressing in layers is the most convenient clothing strategy for
this time of year.
Layering works especially when pairing a golf
shirt or a long sleeved tee, wool or cotton shirt with a raincoat, a jacket or
both. While it may sound a little drastic, you might also want to consider
bringing along with you a rain suit as you never know when you might meet up
with a spring shower. Rain suits are also effective for protection from the
colder winds and breezes you may encounter on the water as they will trap your
body heat in while shielding you from the wind.
If you think bringing a rain suit with you to go fishing during the summer is a
bit over the top, then this next suggestion should sound even more bizarre. Many
anglers even take with them their snow suits when fishing on the water during
the spring. Sure, you are not likely to encounter and snowy conditions, however
you can step right into the suit in your regular clothing for immediate warmth.
This is especially handy for the longer, competitive fishing tournaments. As
soon as you feel that you are too warm, all you need to do is unzip the front
in order to let the cooler air in. While this may sound strange, you will be
more than grateful that you had it with you once you find that you have been
caught in a chilly, persistent wind. Sure, they may take a bit of room up in
your boat, but navigating around it when it is not needed is worth it compared
to freezing.
Regardless of whether or
not it is technically spring outside, the weather once out on the water might
as well be considered to have its own separate rules. Being prepared for any
kind of fishing conditions is the key to being comfortable enough to reel in as
many fish as you can.
