Being good at spoken & written English goes a long way to not just your academic but your professional career as well. Having a keen understanding of the English language is helpful during school & college especially when you’re needed to write essays. A good command of the English language will go a long way to write essay papers that your teachers will appreciate.

It’s a lot better if you’ve paid attention to English ever since your early days in school. Then again, some students don’t tend to focus on language skills as well as they should, resulting in having difficulties throughout college. That’s the disadvantage of not learning English writing skills early on in your academic career: it may come back to haunt you in the future.

All is not lost though. You can still improve your present written English skills leading to better essay writing skills by some easy-to-follow tips:

1. Be an artist while writing your essay, i.e. write something that’ll easily captivate your audience to read more. Picture your target audience and determine just what exactly they would want to know about your topic and how you should answer their questions.

2. If you’re going to present your point of view, then take a position which will certainly lead to a debate or discussion. You can do so easily by writing a strong thesis statement, as these define one precise main idea.

3. Be sure to know what exactly you wish to accomplish from your essay. The three main purposes for writing an essay are to be a) informative, b) analytical or c) persuasive. Keep your aim in mind as you write your essay.

4. Make sure to convey your viewpoint to your target audience in a manner that is most compatible with what you know about their beliefs.

5. Your essay should have a proper introduction, body and conclusion. Place your thesis statement in the introduction, and write this introduction in one paragraph. Use the body to break down your argument piece by piece, and explain each part in its own paragraph. Write the conclusion in one final paragraph to wrap up the essay and leave the audience with a parting thought.

6. Write down the first draft without reviewing or correcting it till you’re done. Once it’s over, revise it as a third person till you yourself are satisfied that the essay is refined enough. Be sure to check for any spelling or grammar mistakes. Revising your own essay will help you to honestly make any necessary revisions to express your thoughts.
