Whether you are watching the big four team sports or simply taking your
kids to the amusement park, chances are you’ve spent time in New Jersey at
least once in your lifetime. Over the last few years, game fishing enthusiasts;
have gravitated towards New Jersey, to hunt the legendary New Jersey Striper
Jetty. Here is a guide on how to catch a Striper Jetty during Jetty season.
Disclaimer: Jetty is actually the term used for the rock
structures located from Sandy Hook to Cape May. Essentially, the Jetties were
created to prevent sand from transporting along the coastline. This same sand
current assists in the migration of Striper bass towards the New Jersey
coastline.
In any year, from the beginning of Spring to the end of Fall, there can
be anywhere from five hundred to 10,000 schools of Striper bass, migrating and
making a habitat on any of the jetties in the areas mentioned above. Studies
have shown that at any time during this six month span, there can be as little
as five and as many as 35 Striper bass residing on each Jetty rock structure.
Jetty Catching 101 – The Striper bass located by the New Jersey Jetties is
your classic saltwater fish. This means, that your best chance to catch more
than one Striper, depends on the time of day, the amount of sunlight beaming
down on the specific Jetty, and the tide. As we said before, at any time, you
could have the opportunity of catching five or catching 35 Jetty in one
expedition.
It should be noted, that although you do have the option of fishing for
the Striper, right on the actual jetty, it is much safer to do so from a boat.
However, since timing is everything, you have to be aware of the tide, as one
wrong steer towards a Jetty, can cause you to crash into the structure. What’s more, you will want to get to the
Jetty early in the morning, and use a saltwater fishing net, as the earlier you
begin your expedition, the better chance you have of being the first person or
people to that specific Jetty. In years past, many people have been
disappointed hunting for Striper bass, because a different boat has already
been to the Jetty they were planning on using.
