Whenever fishing for bass that
have suspended themselves in deep, clear water, there is an effective worm
fishing method that can be utilized known as doodling. In order to perform this
technique you will need medium-light spinning or baitcasting equipment and an
action rod no longer than six feet in length.
Spinning gear is usually
considered ideal when you are fishing in water that is rather deep. When you
are flipping, you should have a test line of 10 pounds when baitcasting. In
between your sinker and a live worm, attach a small, glass bead. Make sure that
the worms you are working with are no longer than about 4 inches long and your
hooks should be size 1/0. If you are using grubs instead of worms, these should
be no longer than three inches long with a size 1 hook.
One of the best spring time bass
fishing tips to remember is to use tail worms during this season. During the
winter or the fall however is when it is best to stick to using the straight
tailed worms.
Whenever you decide to fish the
floor in deeper water with structure, always incorporate a 3/16 ounce weight or
a 5/32 ounce weight for the suspended bass.
Let your lure sink to the
appropriate depth and then lightly jiggle the end of your rod. This movement
will catch the attention of the fish in the vicinity. Once you have done that,
wait about half a minute before you
jiggle the rod again. You will then want to carefully pull up on your rod about
six inches or so before dropping it back down slowly. Repeat this procedure multiple
times. If it is beginning to appear as if the fish are not reacting to this
method, chances are that you need to slow your movements down a bit.
In water that is around forty
feet deep or so, you must always keep in mind that bites might end up feeling
like somewhat of a tug or a pull instead of a jerk. As soon as you suspect
anything might be strange, set your hook.
If you are fishing on a day that
is darker due to clouds, try to stick to lures that are purple in color. During
the days that are sunnier in the spring and summer you will want to opt for
colors such as motor oil. This is mainly because your lure will appear to the
bass as a small fry, particularly if the water is rather deep.
