Things to Know About Stun Gun Batons

A stun baton (often referred to as electric baton) is an electroshock weapon used for self defense. They have been the weapon of choice for watchmen, law enforcement and armed forces worldwide for decades. Today stun batons are becoming much more commonplace since progressively more average people are carrying them for their own self preservation. 

Stun batons are an effective means of personal security because they can debilitate an aggressor by emitting a temporary high-voltage low-current electrical discharge to override the body's muscle-triggering mechanisms. The voltage from one of these mechanisms can range from around 300,000 volts to 4.5 million volts depending on the model; with the most common being in the 500,000 to 800,000 volt ranges. Most stun batons are made from non-conductive substances such as heavy weight plastic or rubber which protects the user from receiving a shock while using it. These materials are simply not dense enough to be used as a contact weapon and probably won't have any effect on the assailant even if you did attempt to strike him with it.

A typical stun stick has two metal projections at the end of the stick which operates by arcing electrical current between the two projections. Jabbing an attacker with this end of the baton while activating the device will enfeeble an intruder. A three to five second electrical discharge will leave the culprit dazed and temporarily unable to move. Stun batons also have metal strips that run the length of the baton from the tip. These metal strips are also capable of stunning your attacker. This prevents the attacker from seizing the baton as you're trying to stun him.

The most effective places to use a stun baton is against the attacker's neck, torso or hips.  These particular areas of the human body are where nerve centers are located; although a stun gun baton will work on any part of the body. For maximum effect, hold the stun stick against the assailant and fire as long as necessary to disable them so you can run for safety.
