Her sultry eyes have you mesmerized as she sways her hips just for you. She beckons, she teases and then she lifts the delicate veil from her face and gracefully flings it at you. You reach out to grab it, its right in front of you at arm’s length and your fingers close around it, your mind already feeling the softness of the cloth till a split second later it registers the fact that there’s nothing in your hand except an oddly formed fist. Another milisecond and you realize that at least ten other people spread across the theater have had the same realization by now. You sheepishly hope no one’s noticed you, adjust your glasses and continue enjoying the experience of 3D films.
Welcome to the world of
3D films. But, what exactly is a 3D film? To keep it simple, it’s all about projections. When cameras are used to project the same image from different angles and then superimposed on one another, then the much needed 3rd dimension, aka depth perception, gets added to the projection. This then has the effect of making one feel that the people, places and things on screen are actually around us. It does not require a special camera to shoot 3D movies but yes special projectors and eyewear aids are often the norm(aren’t we all familiar with those weird sized glasses, built to fit god knows whose head size!).
Ofcourse, there is a lot more involved technically, different methods of projecting 3D images exist today some which allow a 3D glass less viewing of the imagery as well. But what is important is that 3D films have today found a market like never before and as a result many more movies like “Avatar” are in the line of production. Now that’s good news because, what would be nicer than going in on a hot day into the theater and having water splash into your face as the beautiful bronzed body dives into the pool. Well, almost splashed till they start adding the 4th dimension. Then we may need umbrellas too along with those red and blue glasses. Thank god size won’t be an issue there!
