Joining your first riding club can be a little nerve racking when you don't know what to expect. Of course there is nothing to be worried about. You are going to put your bicycle helmet on, get on your bike and ride! There will just be some extra like minded people riding around you this time. Here are a few tips when going for your first club ride:
Ensure Your Bike Is In Good Working Order
You don't want to end up half way out on your first club ride with a tire that needs more air. Make sure the tires are inflated properly, and if anything is not working right, get it fixed. Some people go to a shop for this, but personally I like to advise people to learn their own bicycle mechanics as it is not hard and gives you a good feel for how your bike works. It will also save you money. However you may not want to try experimenting on your own bike mechanics the day before your first club ride and risk messing something up.
Come Prepared
After a few group rides you will know what you need and what you can do without. In the beginning, be sure you have everything you could possibly need so you are prepared. Bring plenty of water and some food, even if it is a short ride. The unexpected can happen and it's a good idea to be prepared with nourishment for your body. If it's cold, you may want gloves. Don't forget your helmet!
Help People to Remember You
This may sound funny, but almost everyone dresses the same out there. When the pack leader or the other riders meet you, it's a good idea if they meet you standing next to your bike. They may not remember you, but they will remember your bike and if you get lost somehow, it's more likely someone will notice that your bike is missing. Another tip is to dress a little different. Something that will make you stand out so everyone knows who you are. You don't need to wear a clown nose, just be a little unique looking.
Look For Other New Riders
Integrating into any new social group can feel a bit awkward at first. Look for someone else who seems to be out of place, and is probably new like you. They will likely be eager to start a conversation and may likely turn into a good friend. As time goes on, you'll get to meet many people and get a good feel for who you gel best with.
Don't Show Off
You've been riding for 10 years, can go a lot faster then this group you've joined it is high time to show this group what real riding is about! Or you want to show everyone you are just as good as them at cycling if not better so let's kick it into high gear! No, please don't. Not a good idea on your first day. Exercise a bit of humility, and go with the crowd. As time goes on, you'll get to feel your place in the group and everyone will learn your strengths and weaknesses. No need to show everyone that you weakness is your ego on the first day. Ride conservatively and get a feel for the length and speed of your first group ride. If you sprint too early on, you may have to fall back and look a bit lame by the end of the day. No one likes a show off.
Learn How to Fix a Tire
If you don't know how to do this on your first day, it's a good idea to learn quickly how to fix a flat tire and bring along a tire replacement kit. You will likely need it one day, and even if you don't, you might be able to help someone else out. You don't need much, just a spare tire tube, tire lever and hand pump will be enough to get you back on the road in case of emergency.
Riding with a group can be a recipe for a lot of good memories and friends. Have fun, and enjoy the ride.
