Video wall to be used in Batman show

As technology continues to advance, many organisations' reliance on provisions such as computer graphics and video walls rises. Such things can be utilised to great effect.

This summer, an arena tour is set to make use of many hi-tech offerings in order to wow audiences across the world. For the first time since the launch of the comic books, super hero Batman is to appear on stage. A multi-million pound production based on the character is take place.

Premiering soon, the show is described as a "theatrical extravaganza of thrilling stunts, acrobatic acts and illusions" and those behind it are making use of a whole range of computer graphics, as well as video walls.

One of the first venues to stage the act is the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield and the set incorporates a 130-foot wide HD video wall, which will serve as a backdrop for Arkham Asylum, Wayne Manor and the Batcave. Special effects will blend comic book images with live action, including a range of illusions.

Set and props designer Es Devlin, who has worked for Lady Gaga, said: "The stage thrusts out 100 feet into the arena and we've filled the air space with helicopters, smoke, noise and bat signals."

Meanwhile, creative director Anthony Van Laast remarked: "When Batman starts from 30 feet up in the air and flies down across the arena, and we've done the flying test and I've seen what it looks like, it is absolutely amazing."

The specialist, who was responsible for choreographing the film Mamma Mia! and is also currently working on the Broadway version of Sister Act, added that it is not only special effects that makes the show special. He suggested that much emphasis has also been placed on creating a strong plot to ensure people are engaged in the action.
