In most of the cases, this procedure is done along with the procedure called cardiac catheterization. Patients are given some amount of mild sedative so that he can relax while the procedure goes on. For starting this procedure, anesthetics are used for numbing a region like groin or arm. A thin hollow tube is passed up to the heart through the artery of the patient. The catheter is seen by the doctor with the help of x ray images.

After the doctor places the catheter successfully, a dye is injected in to the catheter. This dye flows through the catheter. By watching its movement or flow through the artery, the pattern in which the blood flows through the artery is known. If there are any blockages in the artery then they are highlighted by this procedure. It may take around 1 hour for this procedure to get finished.

The patient stay conscious while this procedure is carried on. While it goes on, the patient may feel some kind of pressure in the region where the catheter has been inserted by the doctor. This procedure is very important to check the percentage of blockage in the arteries. When blockage is found out then the doctor advises the patient to go through Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, which can be done while the coronary angiography is going on.
