Video walls to get airborne

Video walls have been in use among organisations for a long time but generally speaking they are not found thousands of metres up in the air. However, this may be about to change. An airline has revealed it is to use such technology on its planes.

Korean Air noted it is to start an in-flight duty free store on its A380 aircraft. The retail areas will be located at the back of the planes on the lower deck and they will measure nearly 12 square metres. The provisions have been designed by AIM Aviation and Lancome.

Commenting on the development, technical director of AIM Aviation Jon Heath said: "There is a loss of revenue because of that. But, they believe they can get increased revenue by selling higher branded products than they would have gotten from having those 13 seats on the aircraft. Also, by selling the advertising space, they will gain revenue from that."

Video walls will be part of the displays. The technology will be used to display commercials. Meanwhile, the other units will feature cosmetics, fragrances, accessories and a small selection of liquor.

The superjumbo aircraft on which the duty free units will appear will be delivered at the end of May.

Established in 1969, Korean Air has a fleet of more than 120 planes and it operates in 39 countries around the world. According to figures cited on its website, it dealt with more than 20 million passengers in 2009 and during the same 12-month period, it flew over 1.5 million tons of cargo.
