Imagine what would happen if you want to get somewhere quickly and your car is stuck in a traffic jam?  You will not only get frustrated waiting for the congestion to clear up but also waste your valuable time. Today, this is exactly the scenario with internet traffic. Too many users all over the world are trying to access websites and download different types of data. Too much of internet traffic leading to reduced bandwidth, increased latency and data packet loss. Network traffic control is a serious concern.

Network traffic control in simplified terms is the process of managing, controlling and prioritizing internet traffic so that there is less congestion, increase in bandwidth and reduction in data packet loss. Shaping traffic is an integral part of Internet bandwidth management. However, to cure the disease, it is first necessary to analyze the cause. After analyzing them one needs to fix up the causes specifically.

As a user, remember to keep your computer up to date with the security fixes. Worms and viruses eat up your network bandwidth and they can be kept at bay by applying operating system patches. If you are using a Windows machine in particular, would require downloading of many patches that can consume the bandwidth. This can be controlled and monitored by setting up a centralized Windows server update services. Usually a windows machine is left running 24 hours a day and regularly checked for updates. Antivirus software, though, not directly related to bandwidth management can control network worms.

Bandwidth shaping is another important mode of controlling network traffic in order to optimize and guarantee the performance. It controls the volume of data being pushed into a network in a specified time period. In common parlance this is known as ‘bandwidth throttling’.  Bandwidth shaping is achieved by delaying packets or prioritizing one packet over the other. This can be applied at network edges where traffic enters a network and sometimes also applied at the source. Linux and the BSD open source networking system have built in traffic shaping elements.

More and more network administrators are using bandwidth quota to manage network traffic control. This means allocating a particular quota of bandwidth on a daily, weekly or a monthly basis, thus allowing fast network usage for occasional users.

Different tools are used for monitoring and controlling the bandwidth quota. With Squid Proxy, you can implement quotas on proxy traffic. Optimizing internet bandwidth helps in shaping traffic, reducing latency and preventing loss of data is the need of the day.
