Coming up with healthy lunch ideas for your children are a big problem, making sure the little ones actually eat them.

There is no use preparing something special if the kids are simply going to swap them or won’t eat.

A great way to encourage healthy eating is by including kids in the preparation process. Getting children to watch how to prepare easy and healthy snacks and lunch ideas is a great way for them to adopt those habits. At the same time the child learns about health nutritious foods and the energy values of foods.

You should start with easy recipes, for instance try a basic feta chicken roll with hummus or another low fat dressing. The key is to start with something fun to prepare, although a messy prospect but with proper supervision kids can make their perfect snack. Another idea is to teach them to prepare a tuna salad with light mayo, celery, onions or alternatives like tomato and avocado. Kids enjoy stuffing pita bread with different ingredients, so teaching them to prepare a pita is also helpful.

You should provide the healthy ingredients, let them decide what to include in their meals. Observe them and ask them what ingredients they would like in their meals. Reflect on their choices and describe to them a little the various nutritious ingredients and their daily requirements. This lets them both have fun preparing meals and learn.

When kids have more knowledge on the various healthy ingredients, they can develop a weekly menu. You can give them minor choices like choosing vegetables, dips and bread type. It’s a good way for them to start and as they grow they will identify better ideas for lunch and snacks.

Whatever their choices keep encouraging and educating them to make healthy eating choices. Try new combinations, even though they might not work, it will be fun and learning for the children.

Planning meals in advance is good this makes it easier for you and to include the kids to be part of planning and preparation. Kids love deciding what to have for lunch all week, both at school or at home. Also make sure you don’t attempt to teach them complicated recipes it will be no fun and will most probably put them off.

Getting children excited about healthy lunch ideas and creating fun associations makes these habits to stick with them for life.
