Hair loss is extremely common, affecting 75% of men by the time they reach 50. Hair loss can be both traumatic and upsetting, resulting in low confidence and poor self esteem.  75% of British men believe that hair loss cannot be treated...but there is now a wide range of treatments including a hair transplant.  Hair transplant procedures are becoming more and more common, with Wayne Rooney recently showing off his nearly treated scalp.  A hair transplant is now nothing to be ashamed of!

Hair transplant treatment is a permanent solution to hair loss.  A hair transport is a surgical procedure which involves removing hair follicles from areas of the scalp with good hair coverage and re-implanting them into the balding area.  A hair transplant is usually done under local anaesthetic to minimise any risks associated with a general anaesthetic.  A typical hair transport will usually take around 9 hours to complete.  As the patient is under local, not general, anaesthetic they are able to have refreshments during this period.

Scarring does occur with the hair transplant procedure but as each scar is the size of a small dot it is virtually unnoticeable.  If balding is severe and a large hair graft is needed the hair transplant surgeon may favour strip surgery over follicle removal. This involves removing strips of skin with hair follicles contained within them and allows larger areas of baldness to be treated.  A hair transplant using this strip procedure will result in a larger scar.

After hair transplant treatment the newly transplanted hair will fall out....this is perfectly normal as it is the hair follicle which is the important part of a hair transplant.  Around four months after the hair transplant, hair will began to re-grow and at 8 months it will start to grow at a normal rate.  18 months after the hair transplant treatment hair will have reached its maximum level.
