How Long do Cats Live For?

Asking how long cats live for is like asking how long does it take a man to run 100 metres. Every cat will be different and how you look after them, where you live and what you feed them can all have a major impact on just how long your kitten is likely to live.

The average age for cats to live is somewhere around 13 or 14 years, however they can live into their early twenties in many cases if they are in a conducive environment to do so. Obviously, like humans, your kitten may well succumb to disease as it grows older or have an accident which prematurely ends their life. Many cats die at a younger age simply because they are outdoor cats and with the threat of traffic, intentional violence by humans or fights with other animals, many cats will never reach their prime. However, cats that remain indoors will almost certainly live a great deal longer if they are kept healthy with the right pet diet.

Obviously, you have to weigh up whether you wish to keep your pet indoors. Many feel that such an approach is cruel, although if you offer them plenty to do and they have a great number of toys to play with, along with giving them plenty of your own time, there is no reason that they can’t be equally as happy indoors.

The right pet diet is going to be important either way. For your pet to live as long as possible it is going to need to be as healthy as possible. Keeping treats to a minimum and choosing pet food that is nutritionally balanced and scientifically engineered to be as healthy as possible for your pet at each stage of its life will ensure that not only are your cat’s bones and organs healthy, but also that your pet doesn’t become overweight and succumb to problems such as heart disease and obesity.
