This article helps lawn care professionals decide when to buy new equipment.
Starting a lawn care business can be hard. One very expensive fix could cause you to lose earnings rapidly. Can you imagine a $2000 engine replacement? Equipment will have its difficulties. This article will help you plan which will put more money in your pocket.

Mowers that are slightly used are excellent purchases. Depreciation is too much of a problem with new lawn mowers. I don't recommend this, however, if you have lots of money, then proceed. The recommended option is for you to buy mowers with less than 500 hours of use. Count yourself fortunate if you find a lawn mower around 200 hours. It could save you thousands.

Owners should spend time looking at the manual. Maintenance should be your first order of business. Learn and understand the maintenance schedule of the mower. You need to know when you should change the filters. Follow these guidelines. Maintenance costs will skyrocket if you do not perform maintenance. Daily use mowers should have their blades sharpened once per week. The fittings should be greased every two weeks. Perform weekly oil checks. Clean the air filter once a week. If you follow this plan, you will save money and avoid big bills.

Every 1 to 2 years you should sell and buy newer equipment. Once lawn equipment gets over 1000 hours, even if it been well maintained, you can begin to have problems. Down mowers have repair costs and downtime which add up. You will find that you will not lose much in an exchange. Good deals always help you. I think your equipment costs will be lower using this method than if you try to keep an old mower running past its prime. When you are learning how to start a lawn care business, try to avoid the words “money pit” which is what I called old lawn mowers that keep breaking down

A slightly used zero turn mower is exactly what I would recommend. A mower with a 44 inch deck would be great as a first mower. 48 inch mowers are great, but sometimes they will not fit through the entrance to get into the backyard. So if I was focusing on residentials, I would get anywhere between a 42 inch and 48 inch deck. It may just be the one you can get the best deal on. The first mower I got was a 44 inch hustler with just 200 hours. I paid a little under $4000 for it. I know I might have been able to get a better deal, but mowers with less than 500 hours are critical. I believe there are great mowers available in the $3000 to $4000 range.

Remember, you do not need to go into debt. When you start out, you won't have many customers. Save your money for other equipment and marketing. Do not be too picky. There are many great manufaturers of mowers: Hustler, Toro Scag, Exmark, Grasshopper. You will probably need to settle on the best deal. As your customer list grows, you can justify a more expensive mower. Until then, try to keep your business in the black.
