The cost of health care and medical malpractice in the United States has been an ongoing debate. Find out alternative ideas to reduce these costs.
Medical malpractice has been a hot topic of debate among lawmakers and medical professionals. Because of the high cost of medical malpractice insurance and the over abundance of lawsuits, lawmakers and medical professionals have been coming up with ideas to reduce the cost of insurance and make the claims process go much quicker.
Many people believe that caps should be placed on malpractice rewards in order to reduce health care costs while others say that malpractice caps only serve to protect insurance companies and doctors.
Here are other alternative ideas that have come about to reduce the cost of medical malpractice:
Make patient safety the main focus - Determine the reasons why patients file claims and work together to establish standards to improve in those areas. Don't take shortcuts and make time for each and every patient. It's been suggested that there should be a requirement for doctors to study medical malpractice prevention as part of the process in obtaining their license.
Penalize repeat offenders - It's been said that doctors who have a history of malpractice are the ones driving up the cost of medical malpractice. Their licenses should be suspended or taken away until they can prove that they are trustworthy. Why should we allow doctors to continue practicing medicine if they've been guilty of negligence?
Communication with patients is important - If something happens that was unexpected or a mistake was made, doctors should be open and honest with their patients. This will make the claims process and investigation go much quicker.
Create courts of law that specialize in medical malpractice suits - There have been bills introduced to Congress that would allow these types of courts to be set up. Litigation will no longer be passed from judge to judge and there would be greater consistency in decision-making.
If lawmakers and medical professionals cooperate and stay focused on these goals, it will only be a matter of time that medical malpractice suits will decrease and health care costs will become more affordable for everyone involved. It may sound simplistic, but going back to the basics of just good old fashioned health care can go a long way.
