In the UK there are countless locations for fishing, some of the more highly regarded salmon fishing locations being right on your doorstep.
Of course Scotland is notable as one of the most renowned salmon fishing areas, but places like Devon, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are very popular too.

When you get to your idyllic location, how do you begin? Fishing for salmon is a lot different than regular fishing. The team from Ocean Tackle Store have provided a few pointers to have a positive effect on your salmon fishing experience.

First of all, the area for salmon fishing is very important. Of course we already know that some areas in Great Britain are a lot better than the rest, Scotland having the highest Salmon populated rivers and lakes and oceans. Its best to use a fishery that is active in the conservation of the Salmon population in their lake or river. These fisheries will usually have RSPCA approval and all the fish will be healthy on a sustainable diet, ensuring they are happy salmon.

The particular time of year can also effect how successful you are fishing, with spring and autumn being more approved times of the year. Furthermore the best times of the day are during conditions of low light on cloudy days. Bright and sunny weather will encourage the fish to flock and assemble deep in the holes of the river. Of course if you can detect one of these holes with plenty of salmon inside you can fish there all day long!

Fishing with a partner is always beneficial as you can work as a team. Whilst one of you fishes the other can help spot salmon, or climb onto a riverbank and observe the reaction and behaviour of the fish, locating specifically where they are. Obviously when you have found the salmon stay still and silent, salmon can get frightened very easily and will flee, so always be patient. When you feel a tug reel it in.

Of course having the correct equipment always helps and it alters from region to region, angler to angler. Always make sure your rod is strong and durable, there is nothing worse than letting a huge salmon get away just because your equipment wasn't up to the job. Salmon fishing of course is always made a lot easier by using correct equipment, so always ask for advice from the staff at the individual fisheries before you arrive.

Fly-fishing equipment and lines is a must, with a variety of flies and a wide spectrum of bait. You will also require waders for the deep water in most rivers if you want to reach the prime spots. Also don't forget a landing net as this will greatly reduce your chances of losing the salmon as bringing it to shore. Lastly make sure that you have a permit to fish in the river or lake or you could face legal charges.

Salmon are the more problematic of fish species to catch so its always best to practice before you visit a salmon fishery. Of course using the right equipment, rods and bait always helps and can provide assistance with that all important catch of the day.
