Roofing is odd in a certain
way. That is that if some people look at there’s enough, over time they have
been known to convince themselves that they can do the job themselves. Sound at
all familiar? Well before you order up your materials and set up your ladder,
perhaps you can use a little shot of reality.
For starters you need to
know that the greater percentage of the cost of a new roof is the materials.
Not the labour. So the savings that you may be counting on by doing the work
yourself may not even be there. Then again, considering that you don't have a contractor’s
license you won't be eligible for the contractors discount at your local supply
house.
Then if you are still
determined to chug on through your own project, in spite of the fact that you
won't be reaping near the savings you may have counted on, consider this. That
is that government compiled statistics put roofing as one of the most dangerous
jobs you can do in the UK.
So with little extra savings to be had, plus the high risk of serious injury,
the logical solution is to hire a professional roofing contractor.
Doing the job yourself with
little or no experience means that it would be reasonable to expect some leaks in
the short term and a less that optimal service life of the entire roof in the
long term. No guarantee either because you did the work.
Talk to any seasoned
professional roofer and he'll tell you that a good percentage of the repair
work that they get called out for is patch jobs on work that home owners have
done themselves. So in real terms, odds are that you will be dealing with a UK
roofing contractor either to do the job, or to do the repairs over the years.
In the end though, unless
your roof is flat and unseen from the yard or street, it's important that it
looks like a clean professional job when it's done. You're going to have to
look at it for years to come and with a professional contractor there's no
guess work. When the job is done you're guaranteed that it will look, function
and last as a professionally installed roof is supposed to.
