There are many different types of saddles out there, this article will point them out and why each of them is is putted on the horse:

Barrel saddle – a barrel saddle is a light weighted saddle which has such a seat that the rider sits in a secure way therefore does not falls of. This feature is not found in just barrel saddles but in other saddles as well. Basically barrel saddles allow a horse to run fast and to make sharp turns.

Trail Saddle – this saddle is basically designed to provide the maximum level of comfort to the rider and of course the horse. A trail horse is used to provide a long walks at low speeds and for such long walks the saddle need to be comfortable for the rider and the horse.

Endurance Saddle – this saddle can be said to be somewhere between the upper two saddles; these saddles are used for travelling on a horse for a rather long time at speeds greater than that of trail horses. This saddle rather spreads the weight of the rider all over the back of the horse therefore decreasing the pressure on the horse at a particular spot; furthermore if you want to pull of a stunt involving you to get of the horse while it is at a speed than this saddle should be used.

There are many other types of saddles, and each has a specific purpose, it is best that you go through all of them and before purchasing it would be best that you try it on the horse. Saddles don’t come off cheap but that does not mean that you try to any single saddle on more than one horse; this might make the horse uncomfortable and would result it providing you an uncomfortable ride or even hurt the horse.
