Take the greatest of care applying Decals to scale models

Having spent ages piecing models together with painstaking precision, and painting them to look totally authentic, the last thing you want to do is fall at the final hurdle by getting the application of the Decals wrong.  When you open a new model kit for the first time and weigh up all the parts that are inside, take your time to familiarise yourself with the Decals that have been supplied.  Many will be water slide transfers that slip off their backing sheets once water has been applied to the decals.  They can be a little fiddly to get to used to at first but with a little practice the Decals can be applied to the model and once they’re dabbed into position they add the finishing touch to the scale model, whether its a fighter plane or a formula one racing car.

Tips for applying decals to scale models

If this is your first time applying water slide transfers to a model it can be a little intimidating.  Careful preparation will most definitely help with the process and a few model making tools come in handy to assist when applying the Decals. Tools to buy include a set of scissors, tweezers and a small artist’s paint brush, you’ll also need a bowl of warm water, and a cotton flannel or a good quality tissue to dab excess water away.  The scissors come in handy to cut around the Decals and the tweezers are used to remove the transfers from their backing sheet once they’ve been submersed in warm water. It’s best to leave the Decals on their backing sheet until the last possible minute before you carefully slide them into position on the model. Once you’re happy with the positioning of the Decals use the flannel or the tissue to remove the excess water before taking the paint brush and gently brushing over the transfers to remove any water that’s trapped underneath.

Practice makes perfect

The more Decals you apply the more experienced you’ll become at the task.  The big tip is to be patient when applying Decals.  Don’t rush the job. Take your time applying water slide transfers and you’ll achieve brilliant results with the decals.  Yes they can drive you mad at times, especially the tiniest of Decals that fit into intricate areas but with care and patience you’ll see the project through.  If it goes wrong try not to panic, replacement Decals can always be found. However, there’s no real reason why you should have to resort to this course of action.
