Dogs and cats both have very specific nutritional needs that need to be adequately met. This is also tempered by the species of the pet, its size and sensitivity. To gain an idea of the amount you should be feeding your pet, you should first weigh and then consult either a feeding guide or your vet.

Dog nutrition is highly dependent on a good balance of certain minerals. Calcium and phosphorous must be professionally balanced to maintain your dog’s metabolism, so it is not always a good idea to give treats from your dinner table when you are cooking, for instance.

Dogs also need food which provides sufficient levels of taurine, which is vital to your dog’s ongoing health. Without enough taurine your dog could start to suffer from eye and heart issues. Despite what you might think, raw meat is not a vital factor in dog nutrition. In fact, it could be unnecessarily spreading harmful bacteria like E.coli, salmonella, and listeria, all of which could not only affect your pet but compromise the health of your family and anyone who comes into contact with the animal.

Cat nutrition is very similar to dogs, since cats also require a very specific balance of calcium and phosphorous and it is also potentially dangerous to feed them raw meat. One of the most common held beliefs is that cats love fish. This is on a good foundation since fish provides a good source of protein, amino acids and the fatty acids, omega 3 and 6. However, certain types of fish can remove certain minerals, so it is important to be careful.

Hill’s Pet foods ensure that dog and cat nutrition is scientifically blended to guarantee that your pet receives all the right vitamins and minerals in all the right amounts. As long as you have identified the correct food, you should be able to find the perfect pet food.
