There is no need to struggle with the unnecessary hardships of threading a standard needle when the alternatives make it so easy.

Sewing Is Not Simple

As anyone who has ever experienced the difficulty associated with threading needles will attest, sewing is no simple feat.  The standard needle has an eye no larger than most thread. It takes no shortage of keen eyesight and a calm, steady hand to guide the thread through the tiny hole. In order to achieve success in this endeavor, one must possess perseverance and patience.

New, Easy Threading Needles

According to historians, sewing needles date as far back as prehistoric times, some 40,000 years. They are no longer made of materials such as bone or wood, as they once were. However, until recently, that seems to have been the only real improvement. Fortunately, there are now some new, easy-threading alternatives on the market that revolutionize the age-old pastime of sewing.

Side Threading Needle

Perhaps the most popular of these is the “Side Threading Needle,” also known as the “Spiral Eye Needle,” and the “One Second Needle.” This specimen of inventiveness allows the user to easily thread needlepoint fibers and threads through a little spiral shape opening at the side. The idea is to hold the thread in a little loop while running it along the side of the needle. The thread catches on the overhanging metal at the base of the spiral. This easy-threading needle was created by avid seamstress and inventor, Pam Turner. Turner recalls her teenage years. She said she would chuckle to herself when faced with the seemingly simple chore of threading needles for her mother. It wasn’t until many years later, when her own eyesight began to fail her, that she found this event to be no laughing matter. Determined to make sewing easier for the elderly and those with poor eyesight, Turner decided to do something about it. After many episodes in trial and error, she created the now famous Side Threading Needle. This same idea is being manufactured in surgical needles as well.

Calyx Eye Needle

This easy threading needle is no new invention. It was, however, the only alternative to the standard needle for more than a century. This needle features a slot at the top above two large eyes. It was created in 1850 as a means by which to help those who struggled with threading needles. It was a welcome boon to a bygone culture in which needlepoint benefits were vast and a real necessity for acquiring household goods. Many still depended solely on hand wrought needlework for clothing and various textiles. The problem is that the thread frequently slips from the tip of the needle.

Big Eye Needle

At first glance, this needle appears to have no eye at all. The easy threading needle happens to have the biggest eye of all. The top is composed of two bendable wires. When pressure is placed on the tip, the wires bend apart to create a large hole which is a cinch to thread any size fiber. This easy threading needle is the newest on the market and its popularity is soaring.
