Data centres are considered to be the core of any company or business. They are the controlled location where computer systems and your businesses online environment are managed. Without a data centre it is often declared impossible for an organisation to survive. This is especially true for larger companies who require a vast number of devices and data to function. IT consumption is escalating but portraying every data centre as the same is inaccurate as, although there is a continuation of constant features, there are also major differences.
Firstly, there are a number of types of data centre design depending on the business focus. This affects IT consumption and use and different companies promote their development as providing the ultimate solution for controlling IT usage. The main point to this diversification is whether downtime impacts significantly upon the monetary side of things. The choice of data centre design relies on three different concerns, business critical, batch process and real time services processing and all vary in choices concerning energy efficiency. Business critical focuses on downtime preventing productivity which makes revenue begin to decrease instantly. Current transactions may be lost and not retrieved which is a major risk and poses a huge financial concern. This means that business critical data centres put priority on reliability instead of energy efficiency. Batch process does not focus on real time data; the results, if interrupted, can be replicated. The operation simply just needs to be completed within an allocated time frame. It follows that reliability is not a main concern but rather the energy consumption. This is a similar case for real time services processing where operations, such as web searching and other applications, express minor or no impact upon finances to the service provider if they become interrupted. The user may encounter some losses but the focus is still mainly on energy consumption in the data centres to maximise productivity
