Data centre design takes into account more than simply a large building used to house IT equipment. There are many considerations to bear in mind, particularly as companies the world over are trying to become more sustainable and energy efficient. Of course, as well as reducing the carbon footprint, a lower power consumption helps to reduce running costs also, which is just what is needed in times of global recession. Digital Realty Trust are world leaders in data centre design, construction and supply, having built over 200 across the world, and have a green vision which aims to make their data centres as energy efficient as possible. This is done through two main ways – generally reducing power consumption and finding effective ways of removing heat.

With many different options to choose from, Digital Realty Trust also invented POD Architecture, which is used to create the pre-fabricated data centre. Using POD Architecture helps to increase the speed in which your data centre can be constructed – normally 4-7 months as opposed to an average of 24 by their competitors. As well as efficient power usage, other main benefits of using POD Architecture are that these data centres use individual rather than shared backplanes. This means that if your data centre is attached to another, any power failure in their facility will not affect yours. Digital Realty Trust have built over $2.5 billion worth of data centres and are renowned for their risk free, high quality and cost effective facilities. It is important to select the right kind of facility for your business needs as it will ultimately be central to your business operations, so if a POD Architecture data centre does not meet your requirements, there are several other options available to you from custom built data centres to move-in-ready facilities.
