One of the top concerns riders, especially heavier riders, have is sitting their behinds on a skinny bike seat. What many don't realize is that it doesn't matter how much flesh you have on your fanny; what you are actually sitting on are your sit bones, which will fit comfortably on a traditional narrow saddle, no matter how wide your actual behind is.

One of the top concerns riders, especially heavier riders, have is sitting their behinds on a skinny bike saddle (the technical term for bike seat). What many don't realize is that it doesn't matter how much flesh you have on your fanny; what you are actually sitting on are your sit bones, which will fit comfortably on a traditional narrow saddle, no matter how wide your actual behind is. Though you can buy an extra-wide, super-cushiony saddle, if it doesn't fit your sit bones, it may end up being less comfortable than one that is narrow and firm. Because those bones are spaced differently on everybody, the key for comfort is finding a saddle on which the rear supports those bones in the riding position. Some bike shops actually have a special device that you sit on that measures your sit-bone width. But at the least, most shops will let you try a few saddles to see which one fits your best.

When choosing your saddle as fixie bike parts , also consider the kind of riding you will be doing. A narrower saddle is better for the kind of fast pedaling you will be striving for to lose weight. Unlike a relaxed "beach cruiser" position that places your hands higher than your seat and your weight back onto your rear (hence creating a need for a wider, more fully supportive saddle), a fitness riding position places your weight forward so it is evenly distributed on your hands and feet and butt, which reduces the total weight you're placing on your seat. A narrow saddle also allows you to pedal briskly without the annoyance of having your legs bumping into the back and sides of your seat.

Once you have figured out the right saddle width at fixed gear bikes for sale, take some time to get to know the nose (the long narrow body and front) of your saddle. This is where most riders run into trouble in the long-term. The nose of your saddle supports your groin and helps you to control and steer the bike. Too much pressure on that part of the saddle can cause pain, numbness, chafing, and general irritation. If your crotch feels uncomfortably smashed in the riding position, look for a saddle with a cutout or groove in the nose. This is designed to eliminate the pressure from those sensitive spots. The right bike seat should feel natural and comfortable right out of the gate (and many, many miles later). If it doesn't, keep looking until you find one that does.

All that said, if you are brand-new to cycling, be forewarned that your butt will be tender in the very beginning. It happens to even seasoned cyclists who take a couple of months off during the winter. Proper cycling shorts help tremendously but probably won't take away all the sting. As your glute muscles toughen up, the discomfort will subside. You can make the "break-in" period less painful by easing into riding. Try pedaling 15-20 minutes a day until you get used to it. The feeling goes away quickly, and you should be ready to roll in comfort within a week or two.
