White processed, refined sugar is the enemy of healthy blood sugar. Be sure to avoid sugar in all its forms, including high fructose corn syrup, raw sugar, and turbinado sugar.

Cake, pie, ice-cream, pastries and the list goes on endlessly.  After a great dinner, many people love to have a dessert to top off their meal.  In fact, the saying ‘with whipped cream and a cherry on top’ is that same idea:  plop a cherry on top of that ice-cream, covered in chocolate syrup, sprayed with whip cream and dotted with candy sprinkles (with a side of insulin sensitivity issues).  The problem with this great American tradition is these types of desserts consist of an enormous amount of refined high glycemic load sugar which often leads to metabolic irregularity and insulin sensitivity issues.

We live in a hyper-sweetened world and the more “sweet” we have - the more “sweet” we seem to want, a vicious cycle that can lead to poor health, cavities, issues with insulin sensitivity, and obesity. Today let’s look at some of the harmful effects of consuming too much white sugar.

First off - white sugar is the most processed form of sugar. White sugar is made by extracting sugar from sugar cane or sugar beets which have been stripped of all molasses (containing the nutritionally valuable minerals) and then undergo multiple washings and some bleaching treatments to turn it white. Does that sound healthy to you?

As you know eating excessive amounts of refined sugars will continue to perpetuate the underlying issue of metabolic irregularity, as mentioned previously, as well as continual problems with insulin sensitivity. As soon as you can, cut out processed sugars, “natural” sugars and high Glycemic sweeteners. They are very dangerous to people who have problems maintaining insulin sensitivity as white sugar has been known to promote insulin resistance and glucose instability.

Our bodies need certain food elements to maintain a healthy living system, but a large amount of refined white sugar is not part of a healthy body.  In fact, our bodies can only store some of these extra amounts of sugar in the liver as glycogen and the rest is stored as fat, which in turn, leads to a more unhealthy body gain in unwanted weight and we’re talking fat not muscle just to be clear.

Remember, your life is worth living to the fullest and you can take control of what goes into your body.  Consider substantially cutting down your sugar intake and see how much better you feel – both physically and emotionally!  Studies have indicated that both children and adults who reduce sugar intake are less prone to extreme mood swings. Less sugar and a little more peace of mind, how does that sound?
