Plenty of people work from home these days, and for those of us who do drawing a line between home life and work can be difficult.
Plenty of people work from home these days, and for those of us who do drawing a line between home life and work can be difficult. Composer Graham Liverstall highlights this problem:

‘It’s difficult working at home sometimes because some people don’t quite get that you’re working. If I’ve been in my home office writing all day my wife will often wonder why I haven’t done the laundry or gone shopping, and my daughter will always be asking me for lifts’.

Clearly Gordon needs to define his working space with more clarity. ‘I do have a designated office at home: like many people I use one of our spare bedrooms, for me it functions as an office, studio and rehearsal space. This is fine to a point, but noise from other people in the house and continual taps on the door asking me to do this or that can have a serious impact upon the amount of work I get done’.

Gordon has decided to relocate to his garden and has been looking at the available options for garden studios and garden offices. He’s identified the need to be seen as having ‘gone to work’ by his family whilst still being at home.  ‘It sounds very selfish, I know’ graham elaborates ‘but my family’s standard of living depends upon me being able to concentrate and work undisturbed for long periods of time. I have many friends who also work in the arts: novelists, photographers and musicians who have resolved this issue by opting for garden studios. But other friends too: accountants, solicitors and people with their own small businesses have seen the advantages of garden offices’.

‘I’m very lucky. I get to do what I love for a living and I have a great family. But sometimes the two worlds need to be separated. Setting up a studio in my garden is the ideal solution: I’m out at work, but still at home and I’m working in peace on my own, but still near my family.'
