A highly popular course, the Master’s in Business Administration, is one of the most preferred career courses in today’s time. It is also referred as MBA or Post Graduate Diploma in management. In today’s highly competitive world, it has gained the status of the most sought after courses. It is a vastly admired course which is preferred by more and more students.

The duration of this course is two years and the main subjects taught in this programme are HRM, marketing, finance, accounting, etc. It is offered to the students to introduce them to various areas of business. In these MBA  programs, students can either take general business courses or select and focus on a particular area in which they want to specialize. Many countries offer these programs. These programs may be tailored in a variety of ways such as full time, part-time, executive and distance learning course along with their chosen specializations.

In India there are several institutes, colleges  and universities offering MBA courses. The most popular institutes are IIM’s or Indian Institute of Management located in cities such as Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Jamshedpur, Hyderabad, Indore, Kozhikode, etc. Apart from these institutes, XLRI, Jamshedpur, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, Faculty of Management Studies, and University of Delhi are premier institutes for pursuing these programs in India. Admission in these institutes can be achieved by giving the entrance exam CAT that is Common Entrance Test. Other popular institutes are Narsee Monajee Institute of Management and Symbiosis. Some popular institutes in foreign countries are Harvard University, Wharton School of Business, the University of Western Ontario, etc.

There are few basic types of MBA programs such as two year, part time, executive and distance learning courses. Two year programs as the name suggests, normally takes place over two academic years. In part time courses on the other hand, classes take place in the evenings of weekdays or weekends. Executive courses are developed for people who have a working experience of generally 2-3 years. Distance learning programs, as the name suggests, are conducted beyond campus. There are dual programs as well that combine degree of MBA with other degrees to let the students save time, enhance knowledge and also save costs on their studies.

One has to give different entrance exams like CAT, GMAT, XAT, etc to crack MBA, depending on the college applied for. Other factors needed for the entrance are work experience, academic transcripts, references or letters of recommendations, essays, personal interviews, etc. These programs are formulated in such a way that they comprise a wide variety of subjects. In the first year, the students are supposed to study all the subjects while in second year they can choose a subject in which they wish to specialize. Accounting, economics, finance, international business, management science, marketing, operations management, organizational behaviour, strategy, etc are some of the specializations.   

After completion of the course, there are multiple job opportunities for the candidates. People with MBA in Marketing can get a job easily. Their responsibilities are to generate marketing strategies, selling goods and services of the company, etc. They must also possess practical marketing skills to sell out the product or services of the company. Similarly, candidates specializing in Human Resources Management have good career options as well. They can get a profile of HR executive in a company or can join consultants as well. Thus it can be seen that the MBA degree adds a lot of value to the qualification of any candidate and can help the person take a career leap as well.
