If you're a new or young driver and unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, you may need to make a car insurance claim.

It can be a bit bewildering to know where to start, but assuming you have all the details of your accident and any other drivers involved, you can use the following quick guide for reference.

" Double check your policy before you claim

Before making a claim on your young driver car insurance policy, the first thing you should do is check to see if you're covered.

If for example you have third party insurance only and your vehicle is stolen, your insurance company will tell you it's not possible to make a claim.

" Call outside office hours

Most major car insurance companies have claims helplines open 24 hours a day. If you want to discuss your claim and get through quickly you may want to call at a time when others are not likely to be getting in touch.

For example, if you have an accident late in the evening or early morning, calling your insurer immediately to discuss your new driver insurance policy could result in you getting right through.

" Keep copies of all receipts & correspondence

When you're involved in a car accident, it's wise to keep photocopies of any photographs and letters sent to and received from your insurance company.

Things can go missing in the post so having a copy of correspondence you've sent can save you a lot of time and hassle.
If your policy doesn't include a courtesy car and you believe the accident wasn't your fault, you should keep copies of any receipts for things such as car hire so you can claim for these if the insurance companies find you weren't to blame.

" Don't jump the gun

If you're a new driver and your car has been damaged, you may be desperate to get it back to normal as soon as possible.
If you pay for any repairs yourself before your insurer has settled your claim, you may be using a repair company that's not on their approved list. If this is the case you may not get the repair costs back.

The best policy is to be patient and wait for your young driver's insurance claim to be settled at which point you'll be told by your insurer where you can take your vehicle to get repaired locally.
