There are many differing approaches to Chinese Medicine but by and large it is an herbal approach. As with all medicines there is the risk of side effects and this need to be understood.

Qualified doctors should only distribute Chinese medicines and overall this is the case. However, it is wise to examine where the qualification came from and if it has any Western input. Chinese doctors are not always fully trained in the physiology of the body so care should be taken. Also the doctor needs to be fully trained in herbalism as the wrong prescription of herbs can have serious effects.

A Natural Approach

Chinese medicine is based on a natural approach and this means that when you visit the shop you will be faced by an array of herbs, some of which are prepared, and some of which you will need to take home and boil. Be sure to ask your doctor where he is sourcing his herbs from. There is a great deal of contamination in China and this can be transmitted to the herbs with unforeseen effects. Make sure the herbs are from a recognised supplier who will have screened them.

How to Prepare Herbs

You should fully understand how to prepare herbs. Toxic herbs are used and the toxicity is removed by boiling with other herbs. Again if you do not cook herbs according to the instructions they may lose their effectiveness. Be clear as to when to take them and when to stop taking them. Overdosing is dangerous. If you are taking Chinese herbal medicine with traditional western drugs be sure they do not clash.

It is unwise to keep taking a formula for along time. Your doctor should re-evaluate your health as Chinese herbal formulas are highly individualised and conform to the developing state of your body. As with Western drugs the dosage will change and maybe the dugs themselves. It may be that you have a long-term illness and this will require prolonged treatment, but always keep in constant referral with your doctor.

If you feel that Chinese medicine is for you then you must be careful at each and every step that you can trust the doctor and you fully understand what is prescribed.
