One swimsuit idea that does come close, though, is the classic maillot (mah-‘yoh), the one piece wonder that we have seen the world over since the early 1900s.

Is there such a thing as the one perfect swimsuit? Better yet, is there such a thing as the perfect body? The answer to both is no. Thank heavens!

One swimsuit idea that does come close, though, is the classic maillot (mah-‘yoh), the one piece wonder that we have seen the world over since the early 1900s. The maillot doesn’t have to be boring or for “old ladies” either – unless you start chasing versions with that skirt that can make you look even fuller at the hip. If you keep the cute one piece bathing suits clean and understated and opt for a moderate leg height and a self-supported shelf bra (if you need it), not only can this choice be tasteful and sophisticated, it can also read as sexy and elegant, something that the girls donning their two-piece thongs can never say.

Simplicity is critical when looking to invest in a singular swimsuit that will soon become your best friend, as your body gets “sometime,” as they say in the ‘hood. Most women know all too well how much of a fait-weather friend your figure can be.

From a style standpoint, a classic, ever-tasteful swimsuit has a neckline that offers just a hint of décolletage, fabric that just skims the skin (20 percent Lycra will help to balance out the nylon and add snap), and a deep color that shapes you to the eye (anything but black to start). This style expert votes for midnight ocean, black plum, or even a deep slate gray – colors that celebrate the sexiest bathing suits for women over 40 of nature yet still have similar slimming qualities to that of basic black.

Your straps are not only what keep your suit on but also what keeps your style interesting, for they are a place to express your unique take on the season without compromising your most comfortable fit. Elegant chains, braided metallic leather with a waterproof finish, or even a self-strap with tonal embroidery can offer options for making your swimsuit a night-time top in a punch. So have fun with those two zones, and select a look that will not only add interest, but maybe even distract the eye, if you need that to happen.

A fully lined front and back are important, especially when featuring your suit at group events or crowded, sunny beaches – unless you are in Europe, where suits sometimes get peeled off as quickly as we here in America peel off the cap to our sunscreen – if not faster.

Take a good, long look in the mirror, and take a good longtime friend, when shopping for your perfect swimsuit.
