The hidden world of props

We all watch films and go to the theatre and enjoy what we see, but in order for us to enjoy these performances many props have to be produced.

There are specialist companies who work in this creative area and their skills can either be bought or rented. These specialists will create small and large scale props from just about any material ranging through plywood, metal, foam, fibre-glass and polystyrene. They will meet the client, discuss the project, create and submit a design, and then produce the end product. The companies do of course hold a stock of “regular props” as opposed to those that are bespoke and these can be rented for a period of time.

Budgets presented to prop companies stretch from the expansive to the very limited so the imagination of prop makers is always being stretched. The call maybe for fibre-glass flamingos for Dubai, trees for Glyndebourne Opera, giant metal safety pins, giant chess pieces or foam flowers. The choice of material is important as that will control quality and cost and will relate to the clients budget.

Whatever is required to finish a film set or a stage a stage setting can be produced by the prop companies, who pride themselves in being innovative, colourful and cost effective.
