The purpose of the speaker is beginning to show wisdom. But the older I get, the more I realize that the most important wisdom I've learned to live have become my parents. Before going further, you can feel it again with your mothers and mother figures, fathers and father figures, family and friends in the audience today.
When I received the invitation to speak here, I was CEO of a Fortune company with $ 11 80000000000 145 000 employees in 178 countries worldwide. I held that position for nearly six years. It was also a company that has hired its fair share of graduates of North Carolina A & T. You can always tell who they were. For some reason, they were those stickers on their desks that read, "Beat the Eagles."
But as you may have heard, I have no task. After the news of my departure broke, I called the school and asked: Do you still want to come and be its president from the beginning?
Chancellor Renick put my fears. He said, "Carly, if anything, is likely to have more in common with students now than before." He's right. After all, I worked on my resume. I was lining up my references. I bought a new interview suit. If there are any recruiters here, I'll be free around 11.
I want to thank you for me anyway. This is the first appearance in public what I did when I left HP. I long to be here, because this school has always separate what I believe deeply in something that brings me back to my earliest memories I have in life.

Jesse Jackson has taught us, Ronald McNair has taught us, the Greensboro Four taught us that people focus on opportunities to achieve more in life than people who focus on limitations.
The question for you all today is: How do you define what you do yourself?
For me, this is what you make yourself really two questions. He is the "you" that people see on the outside. And this is how most people will judge you because that's all they can see what you get in life, if you have been appointed chairman of this or CEO that you are visible.
But then there is the invisible you, "you" inside. He is the person that only you and God can see. For 25 years, when people asked me for career advice, I always tell them do not give up what you have inside. Never sell your soul. Because no one can ever pay you back.
What I mean by not selling his soul to someone you do not, no less than they are, do not give up what you believe, for what may seem scary or bad consequences - regardless of the consequences of staying true to themselves - are much better than the consequences of selling your soul.

I speak from experience. I've been there. I have been there, although very different ways - and in many ways, and fear in my heart, exactly the same places. The truth is that I have struggled with a sense of control since the day I went to college.
I fear the day I graduated from college. I was afraid of what people think. I'm afraid I can not be measured. I was afraid of making wrong decisions. I was afraid to disappoint people who have worked so hard to send me to college.
I had a degree in medieval history and philosophy. If you had a job that requires knowledge of Copernicus, or 12 century, European monks, I was your person. But the work was not very strong.
So I was planning to go to law school, not because it was a life-long dream. Because I thought that was expected of me. Because I realized that I could never be my mother was an artist, so I try to be my father was a lawyer. I went to law school. During the first three months of little sleep. I had a blinding headache every day. And I can tell you exactly which shower tile I was looking at my parents 'bathroom' on the way home, when it hit me like a thunderbolt. This is my life. I do what I want. I have control. I walked downstairs and said: "I quit".
I give my parents credit in some way. It was in 1976. They should say, "Well, you can not marry." Instead, they said: "We are worried that you'll never amount to anything." It took some time to prove them wrong. My first job was working in a brokerage firm. I had a title. It was not a "VP". It 'was "receptionist." I answered phones, I wrote, I left. I made a year. And then I went and lived in Italy, teaching English to Italian businessmen and their families. I discovered that I liked business. I liked the pragmatism of it, rate. Although it was not my goal, I became a businessman.
I like challenges, and the career I chose for me at first was one of the most male-dominated professions in America. I went to work for AT & T. It did not take me long to realize that there were many people who have not had my best interests at heart.
I started my career as a first level of the seller within the department of AT & T long lines. Now, "a long series of" we used to call long distance to work, but I used to refer to the AT & T's management team, "42 he needs," which was followed by their size, and all the costumes and faces looked the same.

In the early days, I was put in an application at the time called the Program for Management Development.
