Like all counties in the US, Los Angeles County has a three-tiered legal system, subject to federal, state and county laws. The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California has oversight for the administration of all federal laws, the Los Angeles County Superior Court hears all state cases while the Superior Court of Los Angeles is the trial court that holds jurisdiction over other civil and criminal cases.

• Misdemeanor offenses punishable by fines and/or terms in the county jail

• Family law cases involving divorce, legal separation and paternity

• Juvenile cases involving Los Angeles residents under the age of 18 who have either been abused or neglected, or involved in criminal behavior.

• Probates involving the estates of deceased Los Angeles residents.

• Small claims cases involving civil disputes where damage claims don’t amount to over $7,500

Unusual Laws In Los Angeles County

Over the years, there have been humorous, even downright peculiar laws passed by various municipalities in the County of Los Angeles:

• It’s against the law to bathe two babies in the same bathtub!

• A man can beat his wife with a belt or a leather strap just as long as it’s less than two inches in length. If he wants to use something that’s longer than two inches, however, he has to obtain her consent first.

• It’s against the law for a witness to cry on the witness stand in any state court.

• It’s against the law to hunt moths under a streetlamp.

• It’s against the law to lick a toad.

• It’s against the law to wear a zoot suit.
