What is a dog listener?

A dog listener is a rather deceptive title as title as the people who offer these services listen to the dog in a holistic way.  Over recent years the need to understand the behaviour of dogs has increased in importance. With people only to ready to report noisy or aggressive dogs, and with the penalties now being quite severe the need to control your dog is of great importance. A badly behaved dog can in some circumstances be removed from your home and be destroyed, so the e place of dog listeners is now becoming more important.

How can they help?

Some dogs can become aggressive because they are nervous and their first line of defence is to bark and bite. Other dogs can have a naturally aggressive approach, as that is what their breeding has given them. Others just do not like children whilst others will not travel in a car. A dog listener will watch the behaviour patterns of the dog over a period of time and try and understand the psychology of the dog. They will not attempt to treat the dog with medication.

What is the relationship of the owner with the dog?

Many times it has been said that there is no such thing as a bad dog, just a bad owner. Now that is a sweeping statement but with large elements of truth. The dog listener will study your relationship with your dog and ascertain if you have sufficient control over the dog and if there is good mutual understanding between you. If the dog is afraid of its owner then the relationship will need a lot of work.

What can be done to help?

It is probably easier to get the owner to adjust their behaviour than the dog, but in most cases there needs to be adjustment on both sides. The dog listener will work with both parties to improve trust and cooperation. Trust between owner and dog is at the core of the relationship and if that can be established then there is a way forward.
