Increasingly cold and lengthy winters have seen knitwear making a fashion comeback in recent years and judging by the catwalk shows from the major design houses 2011 looks to be no different with Phillip Lim, Mui Mui and Pringle all featuring woollen items in their autumn and winter collections. Surely this is an indication that the high street is likely to follow suit with the chunky sweater, hooded cardigan and knitted dress at the forefront.
Additionally in fashion recently as a hobby and stress reliever is the art of knitting. It's rumoured that Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker are both avid knitters and belong to knitting clubs.
For the most dedicated follower of fashion and popular culture there can only be one answer; create and make your own winter wardrobe! If the idea of measurements and sizing terrifies you there is a more simple answer; knitting patterns.
Knitting patters used to simply be the modicum of the stereotyped elderly knitter making an itchy jumper with a Festive motif which we were then duty bound to wear until July. Luckily as times and fashions have changed as have the manufacturers of the wools and patterns. Cutting edge, catwalk following designs and luxury (non-itch) wools have now flooded the market.
Many of the more modern patterns recognise that newcomers to the field may not have the technical expertise to take on a huge project such along with having a lack of time to dedicate to such a project and so design their patterns specifically with a novice in mind. Beginners patterns come with guides to the different stitches, styles and show the knitter how to bring a project together once all the actual knitting work has been done.
That's not to say that patterns are only for the beginner and hugely elaborate and time consuming projects for the more advanced are also freely available with expert shops and internet sites often categorising their patters so whatever the level of expertise the knitter can find their way to fashion bliss.
Whatever the proficiency of the knitter it's certain that with a variety of traditional and contemporary patterns available everyone can wear their woollens with pride and shout aloud for the world to hear "I made this!"
