There are strict regulations in the way in which clinical waste should be disposed of.
There are strict regulations in the way in which clinical waste should be disposed of. The range of clinical waste is very broad and will stretch from used and contaminated needles, through ladies sanitary towels to soiled linen from patients who are incontinent or have died and released body fluids.  These are all elements of clinical waste that need to be disposed of according to strict Health and Safety regulations.

Sanitary towels

These will be found in toilets in hotels, cafes and in public toilets and should have been disposed of by the lady into a nominated receptacle in the toilet. These receptacles need to be emptied on a daily basis and the towels taken away and incinerated. The receptacles should also be sterilized at every visit.

Hospital waste

Hospital waste comes in many forms and needs to be segregated before being disposed of. Hospitals will tag the waste disposal bags in different colours to ensure that the waste is clearly identifiable and that the correct disposal procedures are followed. One of the most important items to identify when disposing of clinical waste is needles or sharps as they are generally referred to. These needles will in a high percentage of cases have been used for blood tests or other similar uses. It is known that blood carries a number of high-risk elements and thus these needles must be properly disposed of. The phials that contained the blood drawn from the patient are also contaminated and need proper disposal.

Hospitals will also have a significant number of sanitary towels to dispose of and these should isolated so that they can be burnt.

Other items of clinical waste will be contaminated bedding and nightclothes that again should be taken to the incinerator in sealed bags.

Some clinical waste will involve the disposal of drugs and this is a highly controlled process. The empty bottles that for instance contained methadone will be sought after by users and thus they must be destroyed safely so that there is no attraction for the methadone dependant.

The rules and regulations on disposal of clinical waste are for the safety of all and should be adhered to.
